Knowledge is power - understanding how the products that you are using are actually treating your concerns is the key to using them correctly and maximises their benefit.

I hear many people say “oh yes, I use vitamin A”…. but how is that vitamin delivered? What specific vitamin A is it? And why is it important to build your skin up to the higher levels over time?

Why do we say it’s so important to use an antioxidant to prevent the free radicals from ageing the skin?

So here at Skin School I use my knowledge of some of the key information to help your understanding. Call it a kind of beauty dictionary that I have created for you!

VITAMIN A

The remarkable ingredient that provides so much in achieving a healthy, resilient skin. It is the core ingredient in Environ, because the skin has a life and vitamin A is the ‘oxygen’ it needs to look healthy and beautiful. Heat, light and air depletes the skin of vitamin A and it is essential that we replenish this daily – we can do this by using both a topical product (meaning applied directly to the skin) and a supplement.

VITAMIN C

The most incredible antioxidant, it’s a free radical scavenger and is vitamin E’s partner in crime. Our bodies do not make our own vitamin C. Nutritionists suggest we take 2000mg per day – but studies show that 97% of women have less than 200mg a day!

Vitamin Step-Up System

Our skin has to become accustomed to extra vitamins being applied to it, particularly vitamin A, which is vital for its health, radiance and youthfulness. Environ created the industry-leading Vitamin STEP-UP SYSTEM™ to help skin become gradually more comfortable with increased levels of vitamin A and other ingredients, moving from one level up to the next.

Acid

Acids Face acids are the key to a happy skin but must be used in the correct concentrations. Salicylic, lactic and glycolic acid are some of the most beneficial ingredients in your skincare regime. They are among the miracle tools used to fight acne, wrinkles, age spots, scarring and uneven skin tone. Here I explain exactly what each different acid offers the skin

Peptides

Peptides Are in every cell and tissue in the body. They are short chains of amino acids that act as the building blocks of proteins, such as collagen and elastin. Without them our skin is less intact, resulting in loss of firmness and wrinkles.

Free Radicals and Antioxidants

Free radicals are unstable atoms in the skin that are caused by external aggressors Antioxidants are essential in working to neutralise them by protecting the molecules. I try my best to explain this in the simplest way I can here. Once this is understood you realise why antioxidants and sunscreens are so important.

Ultraviolet

Ultraviolet The sun radiates many types of rays, most of which are absorbed by the ozone layer. However Ultra-Violet light, the visual spectrum of light and infra-red light come through the atmosphere in varying degrees. Ultraviolet light is divided into A, B and C rays. UVA and UVB are not completely absorbed by the ozone layer and affect us directly by penetrating the skin.

Skin

Skin Here I explain about the skin itself. The epidermis is the top layer of the skin that we see and it consists of five layers. The dermis is the layer of skin that lies beneath the epidermis. I find understanding the layers, and being able to see this in an image, really helps explain where we are targeting the different ingredients and why we need to do specific things, such as skin rollering.
